All dressed up and nowhere to go

What happened to all those lovely affordable local tours? Elderhostel Canada used to have great local trips. I remember going to Prince Edward County to learn about Loyalist history and explore the sand dunes. Another time I took a trip to Killarney, and went hiking and canoeing in majestic Group of Seven country. Then Elderhostel Canada got sold to an American company. It's called Routes to Learning now. Most of the local programs disappeared. They just kept a few that might interest American tourists. The Canadian trips cost at least double what they charge for the American tours. And Canadians have to pay in American dollars, even for trips within Canada. Where else can you look? Well, Ontario Nature used to have a nice adult summer camp on the Bruce Peninsula, but that's gone now too. And many senior bus trips mostly deliver you to gambling or shopping. I know of only one tour company, Mary Morton Tours, offering interesting local day trips and a very few longer trips. So much to explore in Ontario, but you're pretty much on your own, buddy.
