Down time

January 9, 2014

My fitness classes are starting up again, thank goodness. The time between Christmas and New Year's, actually the whole second half of December, can leave you at loose ends. Suddenly there's no structure to your week. Programs at the senior centres, community centres, and schools are all finished for the year, and you have to wait three or four weeks until they start up again. Many seniors are alone at this time of year and find themselves with no place to go. I understand that staff need time off. But wouldn't it be nice if a few senior centres, community centres, or maybe even retirement homes were to offer a drop-in service over the holidays? Nothing fancy, just a place where you could sit with other people, have a cup of tea and a cookie, maybe join in a singsong or watch a movie. Such a small thing, but it would make all the difference.
